AI has the potential to dramatically transform the way we interact with technology and, as new technologies emerge, AI evolves and can be adapted to be useful in countless new ways.

Typically defined as a branch of computer science that studies the development and implementation of software and algorithms to enable machines to think and act like humans, it usually takes the form of machine learning, natural language processing, robotics and computer vision. A rapidly advancing field with a variety of applications like ChatGPT, it is used to automate tasks, improve efficiency, and create new opportunities. As with any dynamic technological field, the legal issues are numerous and increasingly complex as AI-enabled products and services constantly evolve.

This CLE course will offer a general overview of the technology, the current applicable laws and the ethical issues associated with AI and Chatgpt.

The course will:

• Define AI and its different forms (e.g., machine learning, natural language processing, Chatgpt, robotics, computer vision)
• Provide examples of applications of AI applications in the legal field (e.g., predictive coding, legal research, contract review)
• Present the current legal framework for AI, including relevant legislation and regulatory bodies (e.g., GDPR, CCPA)
• Explain the legal challenges presented by AI, including accountability and liability for potential harms related to AI
• Review both the negative and positive of AI on society (e.g., job displacement, privacy concerns, etc.)
• Analyze the concept of "explainable AI" and its significance in the legal context
• Discuss the ethical considerations, such as bias and discrimination, surrounding AI and how to incorporate those ethical considerations into the development and deployment of AI
• Discuss the future of research and development in the field of AI and its application in the law
