Matthew Windman, Esq.
Matthew Windman is an associate attorney at the highly respected downtown law firm of Herzfeld & Rubin, P.C., practicing in the firm’s litigation department. I defend, manage and litigate complex tort cases involving insurance coverage, statutory labor law, municipal corporations, defamation, motor vehicle collisions, elevator repair and maintenance, lead poisoning, bedbugs, mold, outdoor and indoor structural defects, snow and ice removal, and injuries sustained in recreational activities.
I am admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey, and before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern District of New York and the District of New Jersey. Prior to joining Herzfeld & Rubin, P.C., Mr. Windman practiced as an associate at Armienti DeBellis Guglielmo & Rhoden, LLP, where he focused on motor vehicle and premises liability litigation on behalf of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the City of New York, and businesses insured by private insurance carriers. He previously served as a fellow at the Center for New York City Law and a clerk for the Hon. Gerald Lebovits in the Civil Court of the City of New York. Mr. Windman graduated from New York University (magna cum laude, B.A. 2006) and New York Law School (summa cum laude, J.D. 2009).
My responsibilities as a litigation attorney include developing a specific strategy for each case (early dismissal, tender of defense and indemnity pursuant to insurance policy, settlement, summary judgment, zealous defense as to liability and damages, thorough investigation of critical facts), managing extensive discovery demands and responses, appearing daily at the courthouses of all five boroughs on motions and for conferences, deposing plaintiffs at depositions and statutory hearings, defending clients at their depositions, and drafting pre-answer motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, motions in limine, discovery motions, trial memorandums, and detailed reports discussing substantive and procedural issues.
I am diligent about making sure that the claims professionals and staff attorneys that I work with are up to date on the status of each case and that all parties are in compliance with their discovery obligations.
On the side, I have written theater reviews for the free newspaper in New York since 2005 and I am a member of the prestigious New York Drama Critics' Circle. My first book, which consists of interviews with more than 50 theater critics, was published by McFarland in spring 2016.
