The laws that shape electronic media have created media behemoths. These competing media forces capitalize on the incredible advancements in technology and the laws that have both aided but also limited growth. This CLE course will focus on the radio and television industries and the impact of the 1934 Communications Act on these industries. Early regulation of communications and the emergence of cable to the arrival of the Internet and the subsequent deregulatory impact on the 1996 Telecommunications Act to the 2009 passage of the Digital Transition Content Security Act moving us from analog to digital transmission. The course will explain how these various legal actions led to the creation of today’s media giants with unprecedented global reach.
